North Texas is a major battleground in taking back the Texas
House for Democrats, where Republicans currently hold an 87-63
majority. Seven North Texas seats in the State House and one State
Senate seat can be won by Democrats before the 2010 census and
resulting redistricting.
Substantial, untapped resources are potentially available to
Democratic candidates in North Texas. For example, in the 2002
election cycle, donors in North Texas gave over $7 million to
Democratic Candidates and Committees—with the bulk of those
funds going to other states.
Paradigm change is needed for Democratic and progressive organizations.
We must create and groom viable candidates.
North Texas Democratic challengers for the Texas Houses were
underfinanced. Challengers elsewhere in Texas who were elected
to the Texas House spent a minimum of $286,000. North Texas State
House candidates in 2004 did not even come close to that level
of financing.
With strong leadership and financing, the Dallas County Courthouse
can become entirely Democratic before the end of the decade, including
all county-wide offices, judgeships, and a majority of the Commissioners
Court.
